We began with a humulone rich hop oil that was extracted with supercritical CO2. Basic lab equipment was used. This included erlenmeyer flasks, stir rods, beakers, funnels (glass and plastic), round bottoms, and spatulas. To measure we used a balance and graduated cylinders. To evaporate off solvents we used a rotovap. High vacuum pumps and filter paper lined funnels were used to filter out stuff. During experimentation all flasks, separatory funnels, and vials were wrapped in foil to exclude light and prevent premature isomerization of the humulone.
To test whether or not humulone isomerized/ was isomerizing into isohumulone we used a polarimeter. We also used H NMR’s to identify verify that the compounds we were working with were what we thought they were.
